I feel that too many games especially ones we get excited about wind up being flops because the makers concentrate too much on the visuals and music, but not enough on the game itself. It's great that we've come a long way with graphics and sound, but a game needs to be a game. It needs to be fun, interesting and worth playing again.
The only game in a long time that I'm legitimately hyped for is "WH40K: Rogue Trader," and that only because Owlcat Games has a proven track record of amazingness from their prior two releases.
But yeah, it's definitely proven wiser to expect garbage and be pleasantly surprised on occasion than to get hyped and be disappointed almost every time. There are definitely still amazing games being made, but you have to dig for them and most of them are pretty niche in one way or another.
I've been... hmm... maintaining a certain emotional distance from news about Kerbal Space Program 2 over the years its taken to develop. Now it's in early access, however, I find my emotional safeguards are breaking down. ;)
